Obama & Leadership

As the world tuned in to see Barack Obama become the 44th President of the United States, and marveled at this moment in history, I spent time reveling in his great leadership style.

As I see it, the President is well versed in the art of leadership. His consistent and transparent messages and ability to motivate and mobilize people is significant. Just listening to his inaugural address you can hear how he weaves his message in such a way – where messages that had once been off-putting, when delivered by the previous administration, became compelling and digestible.

There are many lessons that business leaders can take from President Obama. I for one will look more closely at his strategies for leading and organizing (national) change so that I can better help my leaders. Leaders everywhere are faced with needing to make changes during these difficult economic times, and it is time to start modeling his best practices wherever you can. Already there are books and articles cropping up that I will research and make reference to as appropriate. One I just heard of is Barack Inc., a book that discusses the President’s strategies for using social media to mobilize change and I hope that it is full of insights and lessons learned.

What will you take away from your leaders? How will you coach them to help them get through these times?
